I consult on the hourly basis or provide answers via e-mail for a fixed fee. If I act as a tutor to college students, the hourly rate is likely to be
$50 / hour
For more advanced projects the effective hourly rate is higher. Two hours is the minimum duration of a consulting session. The size of projects is unlimited. Please send me an e-mail with a description of your project or a syllabus to get a quote

Yes, I have a PA phone number (parent's plan). I live in midtown and I will travel to meet you at your location in Manhattan. Please note that my schedule tends to fill up fast, and it's a good idea to call me in advance. Also if I don't answer the phone - I'm probably with a student. Please leave me a message or email me and I will get back to you on the same day. For references, please see the end of this ad.
Tutoring Philosophy
Teachers are fantastic educators but they have to fulfill the needs of their whole classroom and may not be able to pay attention to the needs of one student, especially if that student is having difficultly learning Math or Science and may need additional help.
This is where I come in. My name is Michelle K. and I am a patient and experienced tutor with a Chemistry Bachelors and Math Minor from MIT (GPA:3.8) and a PhD in Chemistry from Cornell University. I have been tutoring students from NYC's elite middle/high schools and universities for the past four years. I know how to help students break through and get their own "aha" moments to their difficulties in Math and Science. I don't give answers to students; instead I teach students problem solving techniques so that they can "own" their own achievements and develop a sense of well being and pride in their accomplishments.
My teaching experience:
? Tutoring Math and Science since I was a sophomore in college
-- Math - all subjects (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Differential Equations)
-- Chemistry / Organic Chemistry / Biology / Earth Science / Physics
? TA for college level Introduction to Chemistry I/II and Organic Chemistry I/II
My students enjoy working with me because I think of creative ways to explain complex concepts, keep tutoring sessions fun and stress-free, and always go the extra mile to make sure all of their needs are met. Most of all, I push students to challenge their own standards of success and equip them with the confidence and skills that allow them to exceed their own expectations.
I teach a variety of students, from students who are averaging a C/D - I can help you pull to a A/B+ to A students - I can help you get that A+. I also teach professionals going back to school. I know the juggling that professionals have to do between home life and family and demands of school. I design concise and powerful tutoring sessions that will help you understand the subject in the least amount of time.
I tutor the following:
? Middle school / High school Math and Science (private and public). Subjects include Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Differential Equations, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science
-- SAT prep (Chemistry only)
-- Regents prep
-- AP level courses
? College level Math
-- Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Differential Equations
? College level Intro to Chemistry I/II
? Organic Chemistry I/II
? College level Biology I and Biochemistry
? Polymer Chemistry
? Material Science

I am a pre-med student at NYU and I took organic chemistry last semester. I studied for hours and could never fully grasp complex topics and not at the fast pace that was required. And my first exam grade was pretty bad. I wanted an expert to help me on organic chemistry and not just a general tutor who did not major in chemistry. Michelle is simply fantastic! Her knowledge of Chemistry is phenomenal and she is able to take those complex topics and break them down into simple concepts that I can understand and most importantly manipulate under test-taking conditions. For my second exam -- I am proud to say I scored the second highest score in the class! Michelle is very patient with all my frustrations and she will explain topics and concepts in a variety of ways until I understand them. And then we do many problems so that I can see how to manipulate those concepts. As a Pre-Med major, I would like to tell those students who may have not done that well on their first Organic Chemistry or General Chemistry test, it's not too late to recover your grade. Don't waste your time with someone with a degree in engineering; get someone with PhD in Chemistry. Get Michelle! It really pays off to get the best! I got an A for the semester!

When I hired Michelle I originally went with my gut feeling and my son was so delighted with the session. He learned a lot with Michelle with just his first session in Chemistry. Michelle is a highly organized and experienced tutor and knows how to grab her students' attention to keep them interested in learning and so they learn. My son is continuing his sessions with Michelle. I highly recommended Michelle. She's experienced in her field and you're definitely getting your money's worth and more. You are not getting a tutor - you are getting a TEACHER!!

Over the years, my children have worked with several tutors in different subjects. I must say that Michelle is head and shoulders above all of them. Michelle has been working with one of my children on her Algebra work. Michelle is very patient and supportive. And I have been very impressed with how she is able to identify the main issue and using different approaches help my daughter understand it and how to consistently get to the answers themselves. The results have been very impressive; my daughter has improved in her grades and has gained confidence in learning new material. I cannot recommend Michelle more highly. You can not get a better tutor.
